Paddy: Winemaker, Marketer, Owner
In-between making wine, traveling, marketing and family farm responsibilities, Paddy still enjoys getting back into the vineyard and winery when he’s able, and sitting down for the Dominion newspaper daily quiz with the team.
After 39 vintages, Paddy makes wine instinctively, and has the confidence to take risks where others hedge their bets. The rest of the team follow suite, and the wines made owe their distinctive flavour to the skill of the people within our place and a shared passion to create the best wine.
Briony Carnachan: Winemaker
"Vintage 2018 has been my first at Borthwick Estate and we’re off to a great start with the 2018 wines showing real promise. I take pleasure in feeling a sense of ownership of the wines we are making, and a physical day in the cellar, combined with the instinctive, creative and encouraging environment, Paddy fosters in the winery makes this a great job. I look forward to learning about the many facets of a successful family-owned wine business."
Although this is Briony's first vintage at Borthwick Estate, it is her fifth in Wairarapa. After graduating with a BSc from Auckland University, she obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology from Lincoln University in 1998. Since then she has gained experience in many wine regions throughout New Zealand as well as around the world, including the US, France and Australia.
Briony is passionate about Wairarapa Pinot Noir, as well as the healthy outdoor lifestyle the region offers her family. She is looking forward to producing the Left Hand Pinot Noir to pair with Paddy's Right Hand Pinot Noir, fitting the role of a logical, creative and precise winemaker. (Was a requirement of the job)
Lisa Hodson: Vineyard Manager
Lisa joined us in 2000, over this time she has grown into the mother guardian of our vineyard. She tells us how it is, and where the vines are at in any given season. Whether the vines are growing too fast or too slow, she keeps us in the know and the contractors in tow.
Lisa is current reigning champ of the annual Borthwick Vineyard pruning competition, this is no mean feat, given the standard of the competition.
Anne Behrent: Facilitating vineyard care
Anne’s love of the outdoors and growing things has ensured our vines are respected, well treated, and lovingly cared for. Her varied background, including sheep milking, etc, has given her a range of skills which are put to good use around the vineyard, however fishing is her passion. Her challenge is to catch and release more trout in the Ruamahunga River than Mark.
Mark Ellison: Vineyard and machinery operations
When Mark started with us in 2010 after leaving a role as a farm manager and taking on the role as vineyard operations manager, he never envisaged having to Shepherd sheep again. However, with our philosophy of best practice, using sheep from the farm for mid-summer leaf plucking and winter grazing, he still uses his rarely used shepherd’s whistle and is now down to a single trusted family pet Labrador as sheep dog.
